    What type of measurement?

Most generally, they would be the actual value, what most people would call the measurement, and the error on that measurement.

    (So, 5. 4 meters plus/minus 0. 1 meters, for example).

Some measurements will have more than one component (a vector, for example, has magnitude and direction), each of which would have it’s own error value as well.
